Thoughtful Interaction Design

I found this text very interesting. It has put into words something, that I find is very instinctive in designing. I realized, that a lot of things, that are described as a part of the design process, I do instinctively.

As designers, I agree that we get thrown into situations. We have to figure out the limitations and analize everything, be it tools, outer circumstances, needs, specifications and so on. It is chaotic and full of dilemmas. A project rarely comes out, the way we imagined it to be. There is never only one solution, to get to the goal. I think the end product correlates to the designers work process and what the designer deems to be the best solution, which is a very individual thing. I also agree, that designers have to be good listeners and readers of situations. They have to be able to see connections between different situations and be critical of everything in the process. I love the description that a design process is a conversation between the designer and the situation. The part of the text with the “why” questions is something, that I intend to use more in the future. I find it to be a very effective approach.

I don’t agree with the text in the point, that it says there is no natural way of designing. I actually think that, to some people, the process of designing comes naturally. That said, I also think designing is something that one can learn or improve their designing skills by using new methods in the design process. I’m also not quite sure wether authentic attention is possible or not, every human being perceives reality differently.

Everything else I found quite clear and repetitive, for example, that the design process is a social process, and that designers have to be intentional and careful in their working process.
